History of the 30th NCT

The 30th North Carolina Troops were organized on September 26, 1861 at Camp Mangum in Wake County.

The 30th North Carolina Troops were organized on September 26, 1861 at Camp Mangum in Wake County.

Company K, also known as the Mecklenburg Beaureguards, was raised in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on September 13th, 1861, by Captain James T Kell, and organized as the tenth company of the 30thNCT on September 26th, 1861, at Camp Mangum North Carolina.

Engagements

 The 30th North Carolina Troops were first assigned to the District of the Cape Fear, Department of North Carolina, from September of 1861 until it was moved to the Army of Northern Virginia (D.H. Hill's Division) and assigned to George B. Anderson’s Brigade in June 1862 with the 2nd, 4th, and 14th North Carolina Troops.  As assigned to Anderson’s Brigade the 30th fought in the following engagements:

 

--Seven Days Battles - June 25 to July 1, 1862, including 

Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862

--South Mountain - September 14, 1862

--Sharpsburg – September 17, 1862

 During the Sharpsburg battle, General Anderson received a mortal wound while leading his brigade at the sunken lane.  General Anderson died on October 16, 1862.  


    General Stephen Dodson Ramseur took command of the Brigade on November 7th.  The 30th North Carolina was assigned to Ramseur’s Brigade, Rodes Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia from November 1862 to June 1864 participating in the following engagements:


--Chancellorsville – May 1-4, 1863

--Gettysburg – July 1-3, 1863

--Bristoe Campaign – October-November 1863

--Mine Run Campaign – November – December 1863

--Kelly’s Ford, Virginia – November 7, 1863

--The Wilderness – May 5-6, 1864

--Spotsylvania Court House – May 8-21, 1864

--North Anna – May 22-26, 1864


 On May 27, 1864, Ramseur was promoted to Major General and General William R. Cox was assigned to command the brigade for what would be the duration of the war participating as follows:


--Cold Harbor – June 1-3, 1864

--Lynchburg Campaign – June 1864

--Monocacy – July 9, 1864

--Snickers Gap – July 18, 1864

--3rd Winchester – September 19, 1864

--Fishers Hill – September 22, 1864

--Cedar Creek – October 19, 1864

--Petersburg Siege – December 1864 – April 1865

--Fort Stedman – March 25, 1865

--Saylor’s Creek – April 6, 1865 

--Farmville – April 7, 1865

--Appomattox Court House April 9, 1865
